Rikty Var ( 3rd century ) - Holy Gallic martyr . Memorial Day - July 6th .
Saint Rictius Varus, or Rictiovarus, or Rixius Varus, or Rexius Vicarius, according to legend, was Vicar in Roman Gaul at the end of the third century, around the time of the Diocletian persecution . The Roman martyrology repeatedly mentions the Roman prefect Rixia Vara, who, according to legend, executed many Christians [1] . Christian hagiography describes his repentance, and later he is remembered as a martyr, revered in the Orthodox [2] [3] [4] and the Roman Catholic Churches [5] .
Modern scholars, however, doubt its existence and reject the story of its conversion [1] .
Roman Prefect and Persecutor
Rikty Var was made emperor Maximian and was known as the persecutor of Christians. In Christian martyrology, his name appears in the lives of a number of saints. Among them:
- Valery and Rufin (suffered in 287 ): “After the emperor Maximian Herkulius defeated the Bagauds near Paris , he left Rikty Vara as prefect of the Praetorium in Gaul and gave the order to exterminate all Christians. Once Rikty Var cleared the area near Reims , then went to Soissons and ordered that Valery and Rufin be brought to him. Upon learning of the persecution, they hid in the forest. Unfortunately, they were discovered, tormented and beheaded on the upper road leading to Soissons (Benedictines, Encyclopedia, Husenbeth) ” [6] .
- Saint Quintin (suffered in 287 ): “Every hour he called on the name of the Lord in fervent prayers. But his apostolic activity could not escape the attention of Riktovar , the Roman prosecutor who represented Maximian Galerius in Gaul at that time. Saint Quentin was captured in Amiens, imprisoned and chained. The riktovar asked him: “How did it happen that you, a man from such a high nobility and the son of such an outstanding father, gave yourself up, indulged in such superstition as religion, such stupidity, and that you honor the loser that other people crucified?” Saint Quintin replied: “It is the highest nobility to worship the Creator of heaven and earth and voluntarily follow His holy commandments. What you call stupidity is, in fact, the greatest wisdom. What could be wiser than recognizing the only true God and rejecting with contempt fakes that are dumb, false and deceiving? "..." [7]
- Crispin and Crispinian (suffered in 286 ) [8] .
- Gentian, Fulcian and Victoris (suffered in 287 or 303) [9] .
- Donatian and Rogatian Donatian and Rogatian, suffered from about 288-290) [10] .
