The frequency comparator is a means of comparing the frequencies of two highly stable sources. Phase comparators are a particular type of frequency comparators, there are also comparators that allow you to compare the frequency of the calibrated, calibrated measure with the frequency transmitted using a reference radio signal.

Assignment
- Comparators are designed to measure the difference and instability of the frequencies of the output signals of 5, 10 or 100 MHz frequency and time standards, as well as the instability of the frequency and phase introduced by amplifiers, multipliers, frequency dividers and other quadripoles.
- The comparator allows you to measure:
- relative frequency difference of input signals;
- relative instability of the frequency of the input signals;
- incursion of the phase difference of the measured signals.
- The new models of comparators provide mathematical processing of measurement results, which allows you to determine and display on the indicator board:
- relative systematic frequency change;
- average relative value of the frequency difference;
- rms relative frequency deviation;
- rms relative two-sample frequency deviation.
- Comparators receivers are designed for:
- determining the frequency deviation of the quartz or quantum frequency measures and their metrological characteristics with respect to the frequency of the signals of the reference or reference frequencies transmitted by long-wave radio stations ;
- automatic synchronization of the frequency of a built-in highly stable quartz oscillator or an external (quartz or quantum) oscillator with reference radio signals.
Device
Different models of comparators have a different structure, the necessary components are multipliers , frequency dividers and devices that produce a difference signal. Comparators have in their composition a superheterodyne radio receiver .
