Family

Alessandro Verry is the second of four brothers who left a mark on the history of Milan and Italy.

  • Verry, Pietro (1728-1797) - Italian philosopher, economist, historian and writer.
  • Verry, Carlo (1743-1823) - agronomist and politician.
  • Verry, Giovanni (1745-1818) - libertarian , alleged father of the writer Alessandro Manzoni .

Career and Creativity

His first literary works were devoted to jurisprudence. He served in civilian roles and belonged to the literary circle of his older brother in Milan. This society helped him publish the magazine Café ( Il Caffè ).

Around 1766, together with Beccaria , he visited Paris , where he met with philosophers, then London .

Settled in Rome . Translated Shakespeare's works into Italian. He wrote two tragedies - Panthea (Pantea, 1779) and Milan Conspiracy (La congiura di Milano, 1779), which had little success. But the “Roman Nights” (Notti romane al sepolcro degli Scipioni, two parts in 1792 and 1804) were translated into all European languages ​​- stories about Roman history, characteristics of the most important persons and eras of Rome. The third, unpublished part of the work was discovered in 1967.

Also wrote:

  • Biblioteca scelta di opere italiane antiche e moderne (1818), an experience of the general history of Italy , beginning with the founding of Rome ;
  • analysis and comments on Xenophon Cyropedia ;
  • analysis and criticism of the most important Greek speakers;
  • the novel "Sappho" (Le avventure di Saffo poetessa di Mitilene, 1809);
  • The Life of Herostratus (La vita di Erostrato, 1815).

He died in 1816 in Rome.
