Biography
Georgy Gubkin was born on April 10, 1919 in the village of Semidomka (now the Konstantinovsky District of the Amur Region ) in a peasant family. He graduated from high school in Blagoveshchensk , worked as a teacher in a rural school. In August 1941, Gubkin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1942 he graduated from the Khabarovsk Military Infantry School. Since July 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk , the liberation of Kharkov , the Byelorussian SSR . He participated in battles on the Voronezh , Western and 3rd Belorussian fronts. He was wounded and shell-shocked four times. By August 1944, Captain Georgy Gubkin commanded the 2nd battalion of the 297th Infantry Regiment of the 184th Infantry Division of the 5th Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself in battles in the territory of the Lithuanian SSR [1] .
On August 17, 1944, in battles near the town of Kudirkos-Naumestis , the Gubkin battalion broke through the powerful German defenses and, pursuing the retreating enemy, was the first in the Red Army to reach the state border with Germany [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “accomplishing a heroic deed in battles with the German invaders,” Captain Georgy Gubkin was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 7117 [1] .
He participated in the Soviet-Japanese war . In 1949, Gubkin graduated from the Frunze Military Academy . In 1962, with the rank of colonel, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in the city of Khimki, Moscow Region , worked as a senior engineer at the USSR Ministry of Engineering. He died on July 10, 2003, was buried at the Novoluzhinsky cemetery in Khimki [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Red Banner , Bohdan Khmelnitsky 3rd degree, Alexander Nevsky , World War 1 and 2 degrees, the Red Star , a number of medals, as well as the American Order. Honorary citizen of the cities of Sakiai and Kudirkos-Naumestis [1] .
Gubkin’s bust is installed in his native village [1] .
