Life and work
V. von Lindenschmit the Younger was the son of the artist V. Lindenschmit the Elder . He received his first drawing lessons from his uncle Ludwig Lindenshmitt in Mainz. In 1844, he entered the Munich Academy of Arts as a young man. In parallel, Lindenshmitt is studying xylography and lithography. After the death of his father, he studies at the Stadel Institute in Frankfurt, and then at the Academy of Antwerp. Then the artist leaves for Paris, where he writes a number of paintings of historical and genre content ("Countess of Rudolstadt and Alba", "Harvest" - both in the Hamburg Art Gallery).
In 1853, W. von Lindenshmit the Younger returned to Germany. He lives for several years in Frankfurt, where he creates a number of paintings on historical topics: “The Captivity of King Francis I at Pavia (1525)”, “The Death of Franz von Zikkingen” (1861), “The Assembly and Reformation in Marburg” (1862) and others. In 1863, the artist moved to Munich, where he works for the Brookman publishing house. Later he writes such paintings as “The Fisherman and the Mermaid”, “Martin Luther, singing for bread at the door of Frau Ursula Cott”, “Founding of the Jesuit Order” (1868), “Young Luther at Andreas Proles” (1869), “The Joys of Monastic Life "(1869)," Ulrich von Gutten fighting the French nobleman "(1869)," Death of William of Orange, "Falstaff", "Windsor Mockers", "Knox and the Scottish Iconoclasts", "Anna Boleyn", "Venus by the Body Adonis, Narcissus, Walter Rayleigh at the Tower, Luther and Cardinal Caetan at Augsburg, etc.
In 1875, W. von Lindenshmit the Younger became a professor at the Munich Academy. In 1883 and 1884, the artist paints frescoes on historical and allegorical themes in the Kaufbeuren Town Hall, in 1886 he finishes the large-format historical painting “Alarich’s Entry into Rome”.
