The United Provinces of Agra and Aud ( United Provinces of Agra and Oudh ) is an administrative unit in British India , and later in the Indian Union .

History
As a result of the expansion of British possessions in India, in 1836 the territory of the Northwest Provinces was formed, headed by a lieutenant governor. In 1856, the British annexed Aud , to manage which a separate chief commissioner was appointed.
Since 1877, the posts of Lieutenant Governor of the Northwest Provinces and the High Commissioner of Audit were usually held by the same person, and the Northwest Provinces and Aud were called their territory. In 1902, this territory received the official name the United Provinces Agra and Aud , and the “chief commissar” was removed from the manager’s title (although Aud retained some features of former independence). In 1935, the official name of the territory was reduced to the United Provinces .
After the formation of independent India in 1947, the United Provinces remained in its composition until the adoption of the 1950 constitution, when they were transformed into the state of Uttar Pradesh .
