Biography

Alexander Gubar was born in 1909 in the village of Demyantsy (now Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky district of the Kiev region of Ukraine ) in a peasant family. He graduated from seven classes of the school. In 1934 - 1936 Gubar served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1941, he was re-drafted into the army. Since December 1942 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Western , Bryansk and Central fronts. By July 1943, Lieutenant Alexander Gubar commanded the battery of the 872th howitzer artillery regiment of the 32nd howitzer artillery brigade of the 12th artillery division of the 4th artillery corps breaking through the 70th Army of the Central Front. He distinguished himself during the Battle of Kursk [1] .

On July 5, 1943, the enemy launched a counterattack against the positions of the battery of Gubar in the vicinity of the village of Protasovo in the Maloarkhangelsky district of the Oryol region . The battery repelled this attack, destroying 5 German tanks and 2 self-propelled guns, crushed two mortar batteries. When the enemy surrounded the observation post of Gubar, he held the defense for three hours, was wounded, but continued to lead his subordinates, breaking through the encirclement. On July 6, Gubar, being in the battle formations of the infantry, destroyed 2 machine gun points, 1 battery of 75 mm guns, as well as a large number of military equipment and manpower of the enemy. In the battle for the liberation of the village of Lomovets , Gubar’s battery supported the rifle units. On July 25, in a battle for the village of Novo-Ryzhkovsky [2] south-east of Orel, the battery destroyed 2 machine-gun points, crushed 1 mortar and 1 105-mm battery, knocked out one German Tiger tank . In that battle, Gubar died. He was buried in a mass grave [3] in the village of Chern of the Kromsky district of the Oryol region [1] [4] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 29, 1943, Lieutenant Alexander Gubar was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .

A school in the village of Demyantsy was named in honor of Gubar; in 1970 a monument was erected in the city of Seversk, Donetsk region [5] .
