Content
History
The Diocese of Frigento was founded in the 5th century. The first bishop of the diocese of Frigento was Saint Martianus, ordained bishop by Pope Leo the Great . Saint Martian died on June 14, 496. The further history of the diocese of Frigento is not known. The next time the diocese of Frigento was mentioned in 1059, when the lands of the diocese of Eklano-Quintodecimo, existing since the 4th century, were annexed to the diocese of Frigento.
On May 9, 1466, Pope Paul II issued the bull " Ex supernae maiestatis ", which appointed Bishop Frigento as Bishop of Avellino and the two dioceses were united under the control of one ordinar.
On June 27, 1818, after a concordat between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Naples , Pope Pius VII issued the bull " De utiliori ", which abolished the diocese of Frigento.
Since 1970, the Diocese of Frigento has been the titular diocese of the Roman Catholic Church.
