Biography

Alejandro Goic Karmelić was born February 13, 1911 in a family of Croatian immigrants in the city of Punta Arenas, Chile. His ancestors come from the island of Brac . On March 12, 1966, Alejandro Goich Karmelić was ordained a priest .

On April 23, 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed Alejandro Goic Karmelicz as titular bishop of Africa and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Concepcion . On May 27, 1979, Alejandro Goich Karmelicz was ordained bishop by Pope John Paul II, accompanied by Cardinals Duraisy Simon Lurdusy and Eduardo Martinez Somalo .

On October 27, 1994, Alejandro Goich Karmelić was appointed Bishop of Osorno. On July 10, 2003, Alejandro Goich Karmelić was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Rankagua. He held this position until April 23, 2004, when he was appointed Bishop of Rancagua.

In 2008, Alejandro Goich Karmelich acted as an intermediary between the government of Chile and hunger strike political prisoner Patricia Troncoso, a member of the radical Araucan organization “Coordination Arauco-Maleco”.

His niece, Carolina Goich, is the chairman of the Christian Democratic Party of Chile and a presidential candidate in her 2017 election.
