Content
Biological Description
Evergreen shrub or small tree 3-5 meters high (occasionally up to 10 meters), with a trunk diameter of up to 20 cm.
The leaves are shiny, dark green, 10-30 mm long and 10-17 mm wide, with a jagged, sometimes prickly edge.
The flowers are dioecious, white, with four petals.
The fruit is a drupe of black color 5 mm in diameter, with four seeds .
Range
East China , Japan , Korea , Taiwan, and Sakhalin [3] .
In Russia, it is located on the northeast border of the range and is found only in the Sakhalin region. It is found in the south of Sakhalin Island, in the Dolinsky, Tomarinsky, Anivsky, Kholmsky and Nevelsky districts, the islands of Moneron , Urup , Iturup , Kunashir and Shikotan [2] .

Zones of frost resistance : 5-7 [5] .
It grows well on acidic soils, with a pH value of from 3.7 to 6.0 [6] [7] .
Grown as an ornamental plant , appreciated for the density of the crown . Many cultivars are bred - with variegated ('Golden Gem', 'Shiro-Fukurin'), dark green ('Green Luster') and gray-green ('Bad Zwischenahn') leaves, with yellow fruits ('Ivory Hall'), creeping ('Green Island', 'Hetzii') and dwarf ('Mariesii', 'Stokes') [7] . Variety 'Golden Gem' [8] awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award .
