About the album
After a series of albums sounding in the style of prog rock and dark ambient , avant-garde and funk metal , Buckethead recorded a completely acoustic album with a small interspersed bass and drums [1] . The following musicians appeared on it: music producer Bill Laswell , graduate of Berkeley College of Music Terry Antalan and Louis Quintanilla, nicknamed DJ Disk. Buckethead dedicated Colma to his mother, who suffered from colon cancer , so that she would enjoy listening to music while recovering [2] . The album got its name from the small town of Colma, near San Francisco , California , in which more dead than living residents are registered [3] . Colma has been archived by the German National Library [4] .
Reviews
James Lane of the CMJ New Music Report, in his review of Colma, compared Buckethead to “The Bach of Modern Music” [1] . The Independent reviewer Andy Gill generally described the album as “brooding,” highlighting the song “Colma,” “closing the album as the twinkle of a long-dead star” [5] . The Daily Vault columnist Jeff Clatterbuck highlighted the “genuinely emotional” track “Watching the Boats With My Dad”, “so dreary and current so tender that you believe it was inspired by a real moment” [6] .
