A constitutional referendum in French Somalia was held on September 28, 1958 as part of a general French constitutional referendum held throughout the French community . If the new Constitution of France was approved , the French coast of Somalia would remain part of the Community, and if disapproved, it would become an independent state. The constitution was approved by 75.24% of the vote, and the French coast of Somalia retained the status of French overseas territory [1] .
