Biography
Son of John Fitzalan, 7th Earl of Arundel, Lord Clan and Oswestry, and Isabelle de Mortimer. In 1289, Richard became the first in the Fitzalan family to receive the title of Count Arundel from Parliament. In the same year he was knighted by King Edward I.
In 1288-1294, he actively participated in the Welsh wars. When the troops of Madog ap Llewelyn besieged the castle of Castell-i-Ber in Wales, it was Richard Fitzalan who commanded the British troops that lifted the siege of the castle. He also participated in military campaigns in Gascony in 1295–1297 and Scotland in 1298–1300.
Marriage and children
Richard Fitzalan was married to Italian Alice Saluzzo , daughter of Thomas I, Marquis of Saluzzo. From this marriage he had children:
- Eleanor Fitzalan (c. 1277-1328), consort of Henry de Persie, 1st Lord Percy ;
- Edmund Fitzalan (1285-1326), 9th Earl Arundel , Lord Clan and Oswestry ;
- Alice Fitzalan (1289 -?), Wife of Lord Stefan de Segrave;
- Margaret Fitzalan , wife of William de Botiler.
