Ivan Ivanovich Gromov , real name - Garvart ( 1917 - 2003 ) - lieutenant general of the Soviet Army , participant in the Great Patriotic War , Hero of the Soviet Union (1945).

Biography
Ivan Garvart was born on July 8 (21), 1917 in Kustanai in a working class family. Ethnic German , but in the documents was recorded as Ukrainian . In 1918, he moved to Ukraine with his family, where he graduated from seven classes of a school. In 1932, he moved with his family to the Georgian SSR to build the Inguri Paper Mill, at which he entered school for working youth. After graduating, he worked as a turner. In 1935 he moved to Nizhny Tagil , worked as a turner at the Vostokstal plant. On October 1, 1937, Harvat was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1939 he graduated from the Sverdlovsk Infantry School. In June 1942 he graduated from courses at the MV Frunze Military Academy in Tashkent . Since February 1943 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the North-Western , Steppe and 2nd Ukrainian fronts. He was wounded twice. He participated in the liberation of Staraya Russa , the battle of the Dnieper , Nikopol-Krivorozhskaya , Korsun-Shevchenkovskaya , Uman-Botoshanskaya , Iasi-Chisinau , Debrecen , Budapest operations, the liberation of Brno , the Prague operation . By November 1944, Major Ivan Gromov commanded the 3rd Guards Airborne Regiment of the 1st Guards Airborne Division of the 53rd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. Distinguished himself during the liberation of Hungary [1] .
On the night of November 4-5, 1944, during the breakthrough of enemy defenses in the area of Tisasöllos south-west of Tisafüred, Garwart skillfully organized the actions of his regiment, which he successfully overcame the enemy’s resistance and was the first to cross the Tisu , captured the bridgehead and held it until the river was crossed with the main forces of the division [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Garvart was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal Star ” under number 2565 [1] .
In August 1945 he participated in the Soviet-Japanese war. Gromov's regiment crossed the Gobi Desert and Big Khingan , and then took part in the liberation of the city of Tongliao . In 1948 he changed his name to Gromov. By June 1951, Colonel Ivan Gromov was the chief of staff of the 106th Guards Airborne Division . In June 1951, he was removed from office in connection with the concealment of national origin. In the same year, the case instituted on this fact was closed for lack of guilt. Since the end of 1951 he served in various command and staff posts. From July 27, 1961 to August 6, 1962 - Chief of Staff of the 7th Guards Army of the Transcaucasian Military District [2] . In 1962-1968 he was the chief of staff and deputy commander of the Airborne Forces of the USSR, in 1969-1975, he was an assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces in military schools, the head of the 1st Division and deputy head of the Directorate of Non-Military Training of the Ground Forces. In 1975, with the rank of lieutenant general, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Moscow , died on April 14, 2003, and was buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner , Suvorov 3rd degree, two orders of World War II 1st degree, the Order of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
