Biography

Born on July 13, 1919 in the small town of Kadievka in a family of Bulgarian emigrants .

In 1936, he returned to Bulgaria with his family. He spoke Bulgarian with a noticeable Russian accent, which did not add to his popularity among the general public in the future [1] . From 1938 to 1940 he studied at Sofia University .

He was a member of the Workers' Youth Union . In 1940 he joined the ranks of the Communist Party of Bulgaria and actively participated in anti-fascist propaganda among Bulgarian students, for which he was arrested in 1942 and sentenced first to 12, and then to 15 years in prison. After the Communists came to power, he was released, after which until 1951 he studied industrial economics and trade in Moscow.

Since 1958 he worked in the apparatus of the Central Committee of the BKP. In 1966 he became a member of the Central Committee of the BKP, and in 1974 - a member of the Politburo.

Since 1968, he was First Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Committee.

From 1971 to 1981 and from 1986 to 1989 he was a member of the National Assembly. Filipov was recognized as a leading economic specialist in the Bulgarian government, and his name began to be associated with trends in economic liberalization [2] .

He was very close to Todor Zhivkov and was considered as his most likely successor [3] . June 16, 1981 formed his own cabinet after the parliamentary elections [4] . He held this post until March 21, 1986, when Zhivkov replaced him with George Atanasov . This step took place against the background of the reforms carried out by Mikhail Gorbachev in the USSR, characterized as a cosmetic measure to create the appearance of change, the Bulgarian version of publicity and perestroika [5] .

After the collapse of the socialist system in 1989, he left all political posts, and on April 24, 1990 he left the country.

July 14, 1992 was arrested on charges of misappropriation of public funds [6] . He died on November 2, 1994 in prison, before the trial began.

Personal life

He was married to Wieliczka Filipova. He was the father of Chavdar, Orlin and Lychezar Filipov.
