Sumbavtsa ( tau semava , self-name) - the people in Indonesia , inhabiting the western part of the island of Sumbawa . They speak the Sumbawa language of the West Avstronesian group of the Austronesian language family. Residents of coastal villages also speak Indonesian . By religion, the majority of Sumbavans are Sunni Muslims .
Activities and Life
The main types of activity of the sumbaus are farming and animal husbandry . Cultivate the land manually slash-and-burn method. Plow and irrigation are used very rarely. Sumbavts traditionally grow corn, legumes, peppers, vegetables, onions, garlic, coffee, fruit trees. Cattle breeding prevails in animal husbandry , the breeding of buffalo, small ruminants and poultry is developed. Sumburts feed mainly on plant food, eating meat during holidays and celebrations. They live both in permanent settlements and in temporary ones. The traditional dwelling is divided into several parts; no ceiling, above the female part of the house is the attic. On the fields there are often temporary settlements where women, old people and children live. Traditional religious beliefs and rituals are preserved among the Sumbauts.
Family
Elements of the traditional wedding ceremony have been preserved, such as bride price, bathing for the bride and groom, common meal. The traditional family is monogamous. However, polygamy is not prohibited in principle, but is practiced quite rarely because of the large ransom that the groom has to pay for the bride.
