Alphonso Taft ( Eng. Alphonso Taft ; November 5, 1810 - May 21, 1891 ) - American statesman, US Secretary of War (1876), US Attorney General (1876-1877), father of the 27th US President William Howard Taft .

Biography
Born in Townshend ( Vermont ). He graduated in 1833 at Yale College , where with his classmate William Huntington Russell organized a secret society Skull and bones . In the years 1835-1837 he was a mentor in Yale. He graduated from Yale Law School. In 1838 he was admitted to the bar in Connecticut . In 1839 he moved to Cincinnati ( Ohio ). He was a member of the Cincinnati City Council, a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Cincinnati and Yale University.
In 1866-1872 he was a member of the Cincinnati Supreme Court, after which he practiced law. During the presidency, Ulysses Grant was a member of the government. In 1876 he was US Secretary of War , in 1876-1877 - Attorney General of the United States .
In 1879, he participated in the election for governor of Ohio , but lost to Charles Foster.
In the 1880s he was in the diplomatic service. In 1882-1884 he was the US ambassador to Austria-Hungary , in 1884-1885 the US ambassador to Russia .
