Professional boxing career
After an amateur boxing, in which Gomez spent 90 fights, 80 of which he won, Alfonso in 2001 began his professional career. The second match was lost on points to a novice American boxer, Isha Smith , then won by a separate decision of compatriot Jesse Santos.
In March 2002, Gomez tied with a compatriot Lebardo Roman. Gomez then defeated American Dumont Wheeler (12-1) and undefeated Mexican Michael Santos (6-0) on points.
In February 2003, Alfonso met again with Jesse Santos, in the second meeting Santos defeated Gomez on points, and inflicted a second defeat in his career.
After the defeat, Gomez knocked out an undefeated Mexican-American, Juan Carlos Amezua (9-0).
Challenger Reality Show
In August 2004, Gomez took part in the challenger reality show . In the first duel, sensationally defeated the undefeated American, Peter Manfreldo (21-0).
A month later, he met with the Dane, Ahmad Kaddur (18-1), and also defeated him.

After an early defeat in the championship fight, Gomez did not enter the ring for more than a year. In May 2009, Gomez knocked out Juan Manuel Buendía. After defeating two more rated boxers, Gomez entered the ring with former world champion Jose Luis Castillo (60-9-1). Castillo could not stand the pressure of a faster Gomez. Alfonso won ahead of schedule, refusing to continue.
After a successful fight with the former world champion, Gomez was supposed to enter the championship fight with undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. , but during the training process he was injured in his elbow and was forced to leave boxing for more than a year.
May 21, 2011 Alfonso returned by knockout victory over an American, Calvin Green (21-5-1).
In September 2011 , Gomez entered the championship match with an undefeated young Mexican, Saul Alvarez (37-0-1). Alvarez already in the first round sent Gomez to the canvas of the ring. The challenger was able to get up and accept the fight, but the beating which by the sixth round became even more pronounced forced the referee to stop the fight, fixing Alvarez's victory by technical knockout [3] .
In July 2012 , Gomez lost on points to the American, Sean Porter (19-0) [4] .
He entered the ring two years later in July 2014, and won by the decision of the American judges, Ed Paredeis (35-3) .
