Gorriti ( Spanish: Isla Gorriti ) is an island off the south coast of Uruguay .

Geography

The island is located in the bay of Maldonado estuary, La Plata , two kilometers from Punta del Este , near the confluence of the estuary with the Atlantic Ocean . Administratively refers to the department of Maldonado .
The island is 1.7 kilometers long, with a maximum width of 700 meters, a minimum width of 160 meters and an area of 21 hectares.
History
The island was discovered in 1516 by the Spanish navigator Juan Diaz de Solis . At the end of the 19th century, a strong fire destroyed all the vegetation on the island; at present, most of the island is planted with seaside pine .
