Vergobret ( Gal . Vergo-breith) - "husband of the court"; the supreme judge of the Gallic peoples: the Edges , Arvernes , Trever , elected for a one-year term and endowed with a special power, which gave him the right of life and death over his fellow tribesmen.
In this dignity it was erected by the council of the tribe, consisting of eminent citizens and priests . The despotic power of the verbobria did not extend beyond the settlement and was entrusted for only one year and with the condition that there was no former, still living verbobrata in the family of the candidate, and that no one of his relatives met on his annual board. In special cases, the representatives of the tribe also elected a military leader , endowing him with power, almost equal to the power of the vergobre.
