Agasi Tsolakovich Manukyan ( Armenian Աղասի Մանուկյան ; March 27 [3] 1967 , Leninakan , Armenian SSR - March 19, 2018 ) - Soviet and Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler , two-time silver medalist of the European Championship (1994, 1995), winner of the World Cup ( 1988), world champion (1993). USSR master of sports of international class (1987).

Biography

Agashi Manukyan was born on March 27, 1967 in Leninakan. He began to engage in wrestling in 1977 under the leadership of Aram Sargsyan . In 1987, he won the World Youth Championship. In 1988 he was involved in the national team of the USSR, became its owner the World Cup .

After gaining independence, he played for the national team of this country. Already at the 1993 World Cup debut for himself in Stockholm, he won the world title. In the final, he defeated the famous Russian wrestler, two-time world and European champion Alexander Ignatenko . Thanks to this success, Agashi Manukyan went down in history as the first wrestler and the second (after boxer Nshan Munchyan ) athlete who became the world champion under the flag of independent Armenia.

In the future, Agashi Manukyan twice became the winner of the European Championship, was a participant in the Olympic Games in Atlanta . In 1996, he completed his sports career and began coaching. In 1998-1999 he was the head coach of the youth team of Armenia. In 2001-2004 he worked in the Sports Committee of the Shirak region of Armenia. In 2006 he moved to the United States . Since 2011, he worked at the Olympic Education Center, located in the city of Marquette ( Michigan ) [4] .
