Biography
Family
Laudomia Medici was born in Florence in 1518 into the family of banker and Maria Soderini. She was named after her great-grandmother — Laudomi Achchayoli , wife of Pierfrancesco Medici Sr. In addition to her, in the family this name was worn by the aunt, Laudomia de Medici, who was married to Francesco Salviati. Paternal was the granddaughter of a banker and diplomat Lorenzo Popolano and Semiramide Appiano [1] [2] . On the maternal line was the granddaughter of Tommaso Soderini and Fyammetta Strozzi [4] . Laudomia was the eldest child in the family. Her younger brothers were Bishop and the writer and politician , the murderer of Duke Alessandro Medici [1] [3] . Together with her younger sister , who was married to Roberto Strozzi [5] [3] , she was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time. In some sources, Laudomia is called the woman whose beauty helped Lorenzino lure the Duke of Florence into a death trap. In others, it is said that her aunt Catherine Soderini, who was married to Leonardo Ginori, was a fatal beauty [6] [7] .
Early years
Pierfrancesco the Younger entrusted the raising of daughters to Carmelite nuns at the Monastery of in Florence [8] . In 1537, after the murder of the Duke of Florence by their brother, they had to leave the monastery and, together with their family, move first to relative Filippo Strozzi in Bologna [9] , and then to Venice [10] .
Marriage and Progeny
Some sources say that Laudomia was married to a politician and diplomat [2] [11] [3] . The date of this marriage is 1532 [6] , the date of widowhood is 1534 [3] . In other sources, the marriage with Alemanno is attributed to her younger sister [1] [12] . But both of these statements cannot be accepted, because, firstly, the wife of Alemanno, the son of Averardo Salviati was Lucretia Capponi [13] , secondly (and this is the main thing) he died in 1509 [14] or 1510 [15] . Consequently, for both sisters, their marriages with the Strozzi brothers were the first.
Laudomia married Pondro Strozzi condottiere in 1539 [16] [17] . She had two children in her marriage: son (1541–1582), Monsieur d'Epernay, general of the army of the French kingdom, and daughter Clarice (died 1567), married to , Count Tanda and the great seneschal of Provence [5] [18] .
In Venice, where Laudomia moved with her husband in 1541, she lived in a house in Cannaregio [10] . Pietro Strozzi, who fought on the side of France in the Italian Wars and received the title of Marshal from King Henry II , was rarely at home [17] . All financial and economic affairs in the family were under the control of Laudomia. So, she helped her husband in the case of René of France jewels, which the Duchess entrusted to Pietro Strozzi in Ferrara with a request to get her money. Marshal sent the jewelry to his wife in Venice, and she was able to lay them for six thousand scudo [19] . In February 1544, the king of France bestowed the feud Belleville on her husband, and in 1554 the feud of Epernay [20] . Pietro Strozzi also owned the Bressuire feud in Poitou [17] . Together with her husband in the same 1544, Laudomia visited the papal court in Rome and the ducal court in Ferrara [19] . In 1557, together with her family, she moved to France [17] . In Paris, Laudomia was at the court of Queen Catherine , who came to her and her spouse cousin [21] . She was widowed in June 1558 [3] [17] . About her life after widowhood we only know that she remained at the court of her cousin, the queen [21] . Laudomia de Medici died in 1583 (in some sources the date of her death is indicated as “after 1558” [2] [22] ).
In culture
Some art critics identify Bronzino's Portrait of a Lady with Fur from Laudomia, dating from the middle of the 16th century. However, according to other researchers, the picture shows Isabella Medici , daughter of the Grand Duke Cosimo I , and a portrait was painted in the second half of the 16th century. Now the picture is included in the collection of the , in Florence [23] . The collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York stores the silver-crystal bust of the Laudom of the Medici of a French or Italian school of the early 19th century. The author of the bust is not known [24] .
