Name Origin

V. A. Zhuchkevich points out that the name of Lake Naroch is of Baltic origin and corresponds to the words from the root nar- in Lithuanian and Latvian, which designate creatures related to water and “diving” [5] .

E. M. Pospelov believes that the name comes from the general Indo-European hydronymic basis of nar , ner (the Nara , Nyaris , Lake Nero , etc.) [6] .

Description

Naroch is the largest lake in Belarus [7] . Its mirror area is 79.6 km². The greatest depth is 24.8 m. The length of the largest diameter is 12.8 km. The coastline is 40 km long (fourth among lakes of Belarus [7] ). The volume of water is 710 million m³ (first place among the lakes of Belarus [7] ). The catchment area is 199 km². The volume of water is 0.71 km³. Surface area - 79.62 km². Altitude is 165 m. In total, sixteen streams flow into the lake, in addition to them, the Skema channel flows from Lake Myastro from the eastern side, and the Naroch River flows from the southeast [2] [1] .

Twenty-two species of fish (including eel ) inhabit Naroch, the largest of which is pike . On the lake and in the district there are nests of mute swan , small tern , osprey , small grebe .

Lake Naroch arose several millennia ago, during the retreat of the glacier . On the way of the glacier to the north stood the Sventsian ridge . The water from the thawing ice formed a huge body of water, from which subsequently, with lowering water levels, lakes formed the Narochansky group. Naroch is a typical representative of the nature of the north of Belarus - the Belarusian Lake District.

During World War I , the Naroch offensive operation took place in the vicinity of the lake in March 1916 - the first attempt to liberate the territory of Belarus from the German occupiers [8] . Despite the massive heroism shown by the Russian troops, the Naroch operation ended only with local success - the liberation of the city of Pastavy and ten square kilometers of territory. The total number of dead and wounded from the Russian side amounted to 78,000 people.

In 1935, the Vilnius photographer Jan Buglak published a book entitled “Naroch - the largest lake in Poland” [9] .

From 1935 to 1939, the lake was the subject of a fishing strike caused by the injustice of the agricultural and tax policies of the Polish Republic .

In 1991, the northern part of the coast was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Pasynki biological reserve [10] . In 1999, Lake Naroch was included in the composition of the Narochansky National Park [11] .

On the lake shore there are settlements: the resort village of Naroch , villages: Antonisberg, Simony, Cherevki, Pasynki, Nikoltsy, Gatovichi, Zanaroch , Zubrenyovka, Borovye, Nanosy, Stepenevo. There are numerous sanatoriums, the oldest of them is the sanatorium "Naroch" (1963) [12] , the children's center " Zubrenok ".
