Biography

John Donnell Smith was born on June 5, 1829 in Baltimore . He studied at Yale University , was a member of the secret society " Skull and Bones ." In 1847 he graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree. In 1850 he received the right to work in court, but instead he went to Europe for several years, attended lectures at the University of Heidelberg .

In January 1862, Smith enlisted in the CSA Army as adjutant to General John Magruder . By October, Smith had become a senior lieutenant. In 1864, John was promoted to captain. During the battle of Gettysburg, he was seriously injured; on April 9, 1865, he resigned.

After the civil war, Smith began to study botany, made many trips to Europe, Asia and South America. From 1890 to 1907, Smith studied the flora of Guatemala. In 1905, he was appointed an honorary member of the Smithsonian Institution . John Donnell Smith died of pneumonia on December 2, 1928, at the age of 99.

Donnelle Smith's main herbarium, containing about 100 thousand samples, is stored at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington (US).
