Biography

Ivan Grigoriev was born on September 11, 1915 in the village of Ramene (now the Ostashkovsky district of the Tver region ) into a peasant family. He graduated from six classes of junior high school, in 1935 - courses of tractor drivers. He worked in a machine and tractor station . In 1936, Grigoriev was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He participated in the Polish campaign of the Red Army . Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. By January 1943, the Guard, Senior Lieutenant Ivan Grigoryev, commanded a saber squadron of the 33rd Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 8th Guards Cavalry Division of the 6th Guards Cavalry Corps of the 3rd Tank Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the counterattack of the 3rd Panzer Army in the direction of Valuyki - Volokonovka [1] .

Grigoriev was included in the advance detachment and led a group of paratroopers, which were supposed to be placed on tanks. On January 19, 1943, Grigoryev’s landing was one of the first to break into the city of Valuyki, Belgorod Region , defeating the headquarters of the German regiment and demoralizing the enemy’s defense. Subsequently, the landing party destroyed the minefields, broke through the enemy defenses near the regional center of Volokonovka and went to its northeastern outskirts. The tank, on the armor of which was Grigoryev, was blown up by a mine. Having been seriously wounded, he did not leave the battlefield, continuing to command until he lost consciousness [1] . January 21, 1943 in a hospital in Valuyki died from his injuries [2] . He was buried in a mass grave in Valuyki [1] .

Rewards

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 21, 1943, for “exemplary execution of the combat missions of the command and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Senior Lieutenant Ivan Grigoryev was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .

Memory

In honor of Grigoryev, a street was named in the village of Padany, Medvezhyegorsk district of Karelia [1] .
