Biography
Heinrich was the fourth son of the Duke of Augustus of Saxe-Weißenfels and his first wife Anna Maria of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . Being the fourth son, he had little chance of inheriting the duchy, and therefore his father, who was also the administrator of the Magdeburg Diocese , made him in 1674 a probationary of Magdeburg.
Grandfather Henry Elector Johann George I was also the feudal overlord of Barbie County . When he singled out the Apanaži younger sons, then Augustus and his heirs, in addition to Saxe-Weissenfels, he also guaranteed the rights to the county of Barbie in the event of the suppression of the county line that controls them. In 1659, Augustus Ludwig Barbie-Muehlingensky died without having male heirs, and in accordance with the will of Johann George I, part of his lands passed to Augustus of Saxe-Weisenfel, who also became the Earl of Barbie.
After the death of Augustus of Saxe-Weißenfels in 1680, Heinrich, who was already dean of the Cathedral of Magdeburg at that time, inherited the title of Count Barbie under his will. Since Heinrich had (along with his brothers) claims for the title of Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels, he became the Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels-Barbie. This title did not give him either a place in the Reichstag , nor power over the Duchy of Saxe-Weissenfels, but only demonstrated political dependence on the main branch of the clan and elector Saxony.
The reign of Henry in Barbie led to the economic and cultural development of the territory. Heinrich also took part in the Great Turkish War , where he distinguished himself with his cousin Christian .
Since 1687, Heinrich left the old residence and began building a new Barbie castle, the plan for which was composed by Johann Arnold Nering . Since the construction was supposed to be completed only in 1715, Henry and his wife spent a lot of time in Dessau with Johann George II of Anhalt-Dessausky and Leopold I of Anhalt-Dessausky .
In 1688, Heinrich moved from Lutheranism to Calvinism .
