Biography

Sergey Kondratyev received his musical education, taking piano lessons from pianist M. S. Arenskaya. He studied music and theoretical subjects with MM Chernov . He began to compose music at the age of 15.

In 1922 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Petrograd University .

In the years 1923-1930 - Researcher, collector and researcher of Mongolian folk music.

In 1923, he participated in an expedition to Central Asia and Mongolia under the guidance of the famous traveler P. K. Kozlov (1863-1935). Recorded over 1000 Mongolian songs on the phonograph . Later he was engaged in collecting and studying the musical folklore of Komi and Yakutia .

In the future, a significant place in the work of Kondratiev was occupied by music for theatrical performances. In 1931–1936 he was in charge of the musical part of the Moscow Drama Theater. In 1937–1938 - conductor of the Central Theater of the Red Army (now the Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army ).

Author cycle romances on the texts of English poets. He translated into Russian the books: “The Making of Music” by Ralph Vaughan-Williams (M., 1961) and “On Music and Musicians” by Bernard Shaw (M., 1965), and also wrote prefaces to these books.
