Heterodontus omanensis

Heterodontus omanensis (lat.) Is a species of cartilaginous fish of the genus of bovine sharks of the family of different-toothed sharks . It lives in the western part of the Indian Ocean at a depth of about 72 m. The species is known from 3 specimens caught in the Masira Gulf off the coast of Oman . The maximum recorded length is 61 cm. It is not the subject of commercial fishing. It is not dangerous for humans [1] [2] .

Taxonomy

The species was first scientifically described in 2005 [3] . The holotype is a female 60 cm long, caught off the coast of Oman ( ) at a depth of 72 m. Paratypes : male and female 56 and 61 cm long caught there [4] .

Habitat and habitat

Heterodontus omanensis live in the western Indian Ocean off the coast of Oman. These demersal fish are found on the continental shelf to a depth of 72 m [1] .

Description

The back and head are covered with 4 dark saddle marks. Dorsal fins small, dark in color with a white distal strip. The pectoral fins are large. They differ from Japanese bull sharks in the number of marks (4 vs. 11-14), the smaller size of the first dorsal fin (9.3-10.9% of the body length versus 11-21%) [3] .

Biology

Propagate by laying eggs. The female lays a single egg enclosed in a capsule with two long antennae [3] .

Human Interaction
