Biography
Henry was the sixth child (fourth of the survivors) of the Saxe-Merseburg duke Christian I and his wife Christiana Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg . The duke Christian gave each of his sons small land estates, however, the ownership of them remained with the main Saxe-Merseburg line, so the power of the new dukes was greatly limited. Heinrich got the city of Spremberg . The reign of Heinrich in Spremberg led to the heyday of the city of art.
In 1714, he died, having no male heirs, Henry's nephew - Moritz Wilhelm of Saxe-Merseburg , and Henry inherited the entire duchy of Saxe-Merseburg . In the new possessions, he continued the line of patronage of the arts and commerce.
In 1738, Henry died, having no male heirs. The Saxe-Merseburg line of the Vettins was cut short with him, and the duchy of Saxe-Merseburg ceased to exist, its lands were returned to the elector of Saxony.
