Biography
Philip was the fifth child (the third survivor) of the Duke of Saxe-Merseburg , Christian I and his wife, Christiana Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg . The duke Christian gave each of his sons small land estates, however, the ownership of them remained with the main Saxe-Merseburg line, so the power of the new dukes was greatly limited. Philip got the city of Lauchstedt .
Philip was allowed to restore for himself and his family the Lauchstedt Castle, which suffered during the Thirty Years War , and also use the castle church as a parish. In 1685, the first service was held in this church in a half-restored castle.
Philip devoted himself to a military career, and participated in the Augsburg League war as an officer in the imperial army. In 1690, he died at the Battle of Fleurus . His only surviving son died a month before his father died, Philip did not have any male heirs, and Lauchstedt returned to the duchy of Saxe-Merseburg.
