Biography
The son of the chamberlain and senator Matvey Fedorovich Tolstoy (1772-1815) and Praskovya Mikhailovna (1777-1844), the eldest daughter of M.I. Golenishchev-Kutuzov . Born December 2, 1800 , was the godson of Emperor Paul I , in infancy received the rank of lieutenant, and was awarded the Order of John of Jerusalem.
From 1821 he was adjutant A.H. Benckendorff , in 1822 he was transferred to the Cavalier Guard regiment as a lieutenant, and from 1827 he was staff captain . In 1828 he served at the Main Army Flat on the Balkan Front. From 1829, the captain , in 1832 became the adjutant of the emperor. Since 1836, Colonel, since 1841, Major General, member of the Council of State Audit Office .
In 1841, due to his state of health, he retired. Valid state adviser . In 1860, he owned 5,000 hectares and 1,400 souls in Podolsky (Pokrovsky) and Bronnitsky counties .
Since Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov did not leave offspring on the male side, the surname Golenishchev-Kutuzov was transferred by decree in 1859 to his grandson, Major General Pavel Matveyevich Tolstoy, "and to his offspring to the eldest of kind." He took an active part in the education of his orphaned nephews Ivan and Dmitry .
His portrait by Vladimir Gau is in the Museum of Local Lore in Morshansk. He left the memories of the suppression of the Decembrist uprising, published in the " Russian Archive " in 1882.

The first wife is Nadezhda Sergeevna Khitrovo (03/03/1800 [2] —24.12.1831 / 5.01.1832), daughter of Sergei Petrovich Khitrovo (1745–1827), lieutenant general and senator, and Elizaveta Ivanovna Matveeva (1758–22.6.1833) . Died of consumption .

The second wife (from 11.11.1835) - Maria Konstantinovna Benckendorf (1818–31.10.1844), maid of honor of the court, daughter of Lieutenant General K.H. Benckendorf from his marriage with N. M. Alopeus . After the death of her mother, she moved from Stuttgart to St. Petersburg, where she was brought up in the house of Uncle Count A.H. Benckendorf . She was a secular woman and attended the countess E.M. Zavadovskaya ’s salon, which Lermontov often visited. According to V. Belinsky , among the aristocrats, allegedly in shameful connection with the poet, was Maria Konstantinovna . Children:

- Konstantin Pavlovich (1843–09.08.1852), died of inflammation in the brain in Paris, was buried in Petersburg.
