History
The founder of the group is Paul Gilbert. He was 15 years old when he was noticed by experts from the popular guitar art magazine Guitar Player. [1] In 1984, Paul moved from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles and entered the Guitar Institute of Technology. There he learned guitar skills and a year later released an album with a group of Black Sheep. After that, the owner of Shrapnel, Mike Varney, invited Paul to create his own group and recruit a squad. This marked the beginning of the creation of the Racer X group. The first members of the group were: Jeff Martin ( vocalist ), John Aldereyt (bass player), Gary Gnosser ( drummer ), Paul Gilbert (electric guitarist). For Jeff Martin and Gary Gnoshosser, this project was not a debut one - the first one was played at Surgical Steel, and the second - by No Bros. In 1986, the debut album in the style of power metal , which was called Street Lethal. Later that year, Gary Gnoshoser left the band and was replaced by former Hawk drummer Scott Travis. The same line-up was enhanced by the second guitarist, Bruce Boule. In November 1986, the group performed a lot in clubs and was even going to go on a European tour after the release of the second album Second Heat. However, that all changed, as Paul Gilbert accepted an offer to join the new group of Mr. Big , Scott Travis went to Judas Priest , and Jeff Martin went to the Badlands. Bule and Aldereyt attempted to re-create the band by inviting Chris Erwin (guitarist), John Corabi (vocalist), who by that time had said goodbye to Angora, and Walt Woodwart (drummer), who had already worked in Americade and Shark Island. But nothing came of it and the group broke up.
Revival
Prior to 1997, former Racer X musicians went about their business, occasionally intersecting in various musical projects. In 1997, Paul Gilbert invited Jeff Martin, John Aldereyt and Bruce Boule to take part in the recording of his solo album. It was released in 1999. As a result, the idea arose to revive Racer X. However, due to the fact that its members were engaged in other projects, an independent group did not work out and it began to exist as a side project. In 2000 and 2002 the band recorded the last two albums: Superheroes and Getting Heavier.
Style
The original directions of the group were power - and speed metal [2] . According to Alex Meller, the first Racer-X album, which came out relatively “raw” and “unpolished”, eventually became a cult [3] . The musical style was influenced by the Japanese metal of the time, including such representatives as the Loudness group.
