About the album
After the release of Growing Up in Public, Reid left Arista Records and returned to his old RCA Records , starting recording The Blue Mask in 1981. As the album reviewer Mark Deming notes, The Blue Mask became Reed's first album after overcoming alcohol addiction, which cannot be overlooked - the album was created with genuine devotion to the musical craft [1] . The sound of The Blue Mask is similar to the band Lou The Velvet Underground , music critic Tom Carson noted in it a deep romantic poetry and the alternation of hard distorted rock songs with calm melodic ballads [2] . To a large extent, this merit belongs to the musician's long-time colleagues: guitarist Robert Quine, bassist Fernando Sanders and drummer Doan Perry. The Blue Mask was supported by the tour, which resulted in the release of the video album A Night with Lou Reed . The blue cover for the album was designed by Lou's wife, Sylvia Reed, based on Mick Rock's Transformer album. It is worth noting that The Blue Mask did not become a commercial hit, but played an important role in the formation of the legendary status of Lou Reed [3] .
