Biography

Hendrick van Rede was supposedly born in early 1637 into the family of Ernst van Rede. His mother died in February 1637, and his father, Ernst van Rede, died in 1640. After the death of Hendrick's father, the Drakestein estate went to his elder brother, Godard. Hendrick's second brother, Johan, was an ensign ; Frederick, captain, was killed in 1649 in a battle with Portugal; Anthony was the page of the Prince of Orange ; Karel was a knight of the Johannes Protestant Order. Hendrick in childhood was assigned to the Navy. Around 1657, Hendrick was recorded as a warrant officer by the Dutch East India Company .

Rede participated in the first siege of Cochin in 1662 under the command of Admiral Reyclof van Guns . After the second, successful siege of the city ( 1663 ), Rede, as well as Johan Bucks and Barend van Scheulenburg were promoted to captain. In 1669, Hendrik van Rede was appointed head of the Dutch Malabar.

In 1677, Rede returned to the Netherlands. Since 1684, Hendrick has been the chief representative of the Dutch East India Company.

On December 15, 1691, Hendrik van Rede died aboard a ship bound for Surat . He was buried in Surat in January 1692.
