Story

The film begins on October 8, 1993 . The main character, the advertiser Joseph Dusset, fails the deal by quarreling with clients and his ex-wife trying to remind him of her little daughter’s birthday. The main character gets drunk, goes to a restaurant owned by his friend named Chucky, who does not let him in, and then meets a girl selling trinkets at $ 5 apiece.

Having lost consciousness, the main character wakes up in a room similar to a hotel room, which has a bathroom and a TV, but no windows. Later, he realizes that this is a private prison, in which, in addition to him, there are other prisoners. Every day, Joe brings the same food through the window in the door - vodka and fried dumplings . Periodically, sleep gas is launched into the chamber.

Joe spends time in front of the TV. Once he sees in a criminal chronicle a program about the murder of his wife Donna Hotern. In the same program, it is said that their common daughter, Mia, was transferred to a foster family. The killer declared himself Joe Dusset. Joe realizes that the evidence was fabricated by the jailers, who, while he was sleeping under the influence of lullative gas, forcibly took blood and saliva from him. Joe decides to challenge the person captivating him and begins training, while trying to get out of prison by digging.

Fifteen years pass. Joe watches a report on the long-standing murder of his wife and interviews with Mia's foster parents. He writes down the history of his captivity and the names of the possible people who captured him in specially prepared notebooks left by the jailers. In addition, he mentally composes a penitential letter for his grown daughter. On the day when Joseph manages to stick his hand in the place of his many years of digging, he is euthanized and released.

Joe wakes up on the floor in a huge suitcase. He discovers that he was released with a wallet full of money and a cell phone.

The continuation of the film is almost the same as the movie of the same name in 2003. Completely changed the end of the remake.

Creation

In 2008, it was announced that Steven Spielberg plans to make a new film based on the Old Boy manga [7] [8] . In November 2009, there was information that the film may not take place [9] . Representatives of Show East initially negotiated a remake of the film with Universal Studios. Then the Hollywood company Mandate Pictures bought from Universal the rights to shoot the film, and Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio, in turn, acquired the rights from Mandate [10] . In the summer of 2009, the Old Boy Futabasha manga publishing house sued Show East, claiming that Korean company Show East never had the right to negotiate a remake [10] . Show East was liquidated for an unknown reason (Futabasha was considering an unconfirmed version of bankruptcy), and the head of the company disappeared [10] . DreamWorks has not posted any comments regarding the conflict between Futubasha and Show East. In August 2009, information appeared that work on the film was moving forward, despite legal difficulties [11] . According to a statement by Futubasha on the official website, their legal dispute with the South Korean studio Show East was not supposed to affect the planned filming of the new film adaptation: [12]

We are very pleased with the new film adaptation of Old Boy. Right now owned by Universal Pictures. The actions taken by us should not affect Universal rights or the DreamWorks project in any way. The lawsuit was filed to protect the copyright of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, as well as to ensure and protect the rights of Futabasha under an agreement with Show East.

We are very excited about this latest Old Boy project. Currently, the option rights are held by Universal Pictures. The legal action should not affect Universal's rights or the DreamWorks project in any way. The suit was commenced to protect the rights of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, as well as to enforce and protect the rights of Futabasha under the contract with Show East.

In November 2009, unofficial information appeared that DreamWorks could not reach an agreement with Mandate Pictures; [9] that DreamWorks lost interest in working on the project, so the film will not be shot [13] . In November 2010, a Mandate spokesman called the work on the new film “Internet rumors” [14] .

However, in July 2011, it became known that director Spike Lee was still negotiating an American remake of the South Korean film [15] .

On July 11, 2011, Mandate Pictures in a press release announced that Spike Lee was appointed director of the remake of the South Korean film scripted by Mark Protosevich [16] . On August 29, 2011, it became known that the main role in the remake will be played by Josh Brolin , and Christian Bale is negotiating the role of the antagonist [17] . Later, this role was proposed to Colin Firth [18] , but he refused it [19] and Clive Owen [20] began to consider the role. In May 2012, Deadline.com announced that the role of the villain of the movie Adrian Price will be played by Charlto Copley [21] . Later, Elizabeth Olsen [22] , Samuel L. Jackson [23] and Nate Parker [24] joined the cast. Later, due to a conflict in the shooting schedule, Parker was replaced by James Ranson [25] .

Filming began in October 2012 and took place in New Orleans [26] [27] . Josh Brolin decided to get the opinion of the director of the original film, Pak Chan Uk, before agreeing to a role in the remake. The director replied in a letter: “You receive my blessing. But do not try to repeat what we did. Make your own film. ” [28]

Reaction

Criticism

The film received more negative reviews from film critics. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , 42% of the reviews are positive, the average rating of the film is 5.1 out of 10. The general consensus of the critics on the website says: “Gloomy and bloody, but disappointingly cautious and superficial, the remake of Spike Lee neither surpasses the original nor adds anything new to its impressive the legacy. "

Russian film critic Stanislav Zelvensky from the Afisha magazine put one of five stars to the film, calling it “Suspiciously ugly remake of Korean classics” [29] .

Fees

With a budget of $ 30 million in the first five days of rental, the film collected only $ 850 thousand in 583 theaters, which led to a box office failure [30] .
