Minnesota Territory is an incorporated, organized territory of the United States that existed from March 3, 1849 until May 11, 1858, when the eastern part of the territory was accepted into the Union as the state of Minnesota .

History
Minnesota Territory was formed from part of the Iowa Territory . It occupied the territory of modern Minnesota and most of the territory east of the Missouri River , which later became the Dakota Territory . Minnesota Territory also included a portion of the Wisconsin Territory , located between the Mississippi River and Wisconsin , which was not part of Minnesota.
At the time of formation, the territory included three cities: St. Paul , St. Anthony (now part of Minneapolis ) and Stillwater . Administrative functions were divided: the capital was in St. Paul, the University of Minnesota was established in Minneapolis, and the was established in Stillwater.
