Title
Karl Linney in the Species plantarum used the name Gomphrena in relation to this genus, taking it from the work of the French botanist Jacques Dalechane (1513-1588). Daleshan indicated that a plant with this name (probably an amaranth ) was described in Pliny's Natural History .
Botanical description
The genus is represented by annual and perennial grasses with erect or ascending stems . The leaves are located opposite, sessile or petiolate, with a solid edge.
The flowers are collected in single capitate inflorescences at the ends of the shoots, painted in red, white or yellow tones. Perianth fivefold, pubescent from the outside. Stamens in the amount of 5, with threads fused together into a tube, with single-nest anthers. Ovary smooth, flattened. Pestle with two stigmas.
The fruit is an undeveloped acme . The seed is smooth, flattened.
Area
Most species of the genus are common in the tropical zones of both hemispheres. The greatest diversity of species is observed in South America .
The type species is described by samples grown in Gartekamp .
Meaning and application
Gomfrena spherical introduced into many regions of the world, grown as an ornamental plant. In East Asia, this plant is often used in food. Some nations use homophrenic in medicine.
