He began his career at the Ecuadorian club Emelek . In 1967, Fernandez played for the Los Angeles Toros of the National Professional Football League. In 1968, the NPSL teamed up with the United Football Association to form the North American Football League (NASL). When this happened, the Toros moved to San Diego . Fernandez became a player already in San Diego Toros in 1968, where he was included in the All-Star team. Toros were disbanded at the end of the season, and Fernandez moved to Kansas City Spurs , where he spent the 1969 season. He was again selected to the All-Star team, and also became an MVP at NASL.
In October 1969, Fernandez moved to the Dutch club Zwolle [1] , which played in the second division of the country. In January 1970, he was leased to the Go Ahead Club. The attacker made his debut on January 1 in the Eredivisi match against the NEC team [2] . At the end of the meeting, Fernandez scored a goal that saved his team from home defeat. In the next round, Go Ahead hosted the Ajax Amsterdam. Pepe scored a goal in the second match in a row, but the guests in that meeting won 1–3 [3] [4] . In the championship, he played 14 matches and scored three goals for Go Ahead, and then returned to Zwoll [5] . In May 1972, Fernandez became a player in the Haarlem club [6] , and two years later left the Netherlands [7] .
He did not return to NASL until 1974, when he signed a contract with the Seattle Sounders . He played the first three matches of the season, but David Kemp's hard tackle led to a fracture of Fernandez’s leg during his home debut for the Sounders, he dropped out before the end of the season. Fernandez played only twelve matches in 1975, then began the 1976 season with a third round. He later signed to the Tacoma Tides of the American Football League. The Tides reached the semifinals of the playoffs, but were disbanded shortly afterwards. Fernandez then returned to Haarlem, and spent the last season of his career (1981/82) with the Seattle Sounders.
