Robbins Island is located off the northwestern coast of Tasmania. It is separated from the island of Tasmania, which is located in the south, by the narrow and shallow Robbins Passage, with a width of 1 to 2 km. In the north, Robbins Island is adjoined by the substantially smaller Walker Island , separated from it by a narrow channel [2] .

To the west of Robbins Island is Boullanger Bay , bounded on the west by Hunter Island and Cape Grim, the northwestern “peak” of Tasmania. On the east side of Robbins Island is Perkins Bay , which extends to Cape North Point , on which Stanley is located. [2]

Sometimes Robbins Island is included in the so-called “ Hunter Island Group ”, which, in addition to Hunter Island, also includes the Tri-Hammock and other smaller islands [3] .

History

In ancient times, Tasmanian aborigines lived in these places, which in the first half of the 19th century were supplanted by Europeans.

Robbins Island got its name in honor of Charles Robbins ( Charles Robbins ), who at the end of 1802 was sent to these lands by the Governor of New South Wales, Philip Gidley King ( Philip Gidley King ), to prevent the creation of French settlements [4] [5] .

On the English map of 1826, Robbins Passage was indicated, but Robbins Island itself was designated as Low Sandy I. (“low sand island”), and it read “many fresh water swamps” ) [6] .

From the first half of the 19th century, Robbins Island was used to raise cattle and sheep. Since 1961, the island has been owned by the Hammond family [7] . They are mainly engaged in the production of high-quality beef, raising bulls and cows of the Japanese breed Wagyu [8] .
