Steven Delano "Steve" Smith ( born Steven Delano "Steve" Smith ; born March 31, 1969 in Highland Park , Michigan , USA ) is an American professional basketball player who played at the National Basketball Association . He played as an attacking defender . He was selected by the 1991 NBA Draft in the first round under a common fifth number by the Miami Heat team.

College Career
Steve ended his four-year career as the top scorer in the history of the University of Michigan 's basketball team , Michigan State Spartans , with 2263 points. He ranks fourth in his entire school career in gears (453) and fifth in rebounds (704). During his college years, Smith averaged 18.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists for 122 matches held.
NBA Career
Smith was selected at No. 5 in the 1991 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat team, in which he spent three seasons before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in the 1994–95 season . He spent five seasons at the Hawks, then was traded at the Portland Trail Blazers for Jim Jackson and Isaiah Ryder .
In the offseason of 2001, Steve was traded at the San Antonio Spurs for Derek Anderson . He won the league title before signing with New Orleans Hornets as a free agent. Smith began the 2004–05 season in the newly formed Charlotte Bobcats , where he was appointed team captain and was the team leader in the percentage of three-point shots. Later on February 24, 2005, he was traded at the Miami Heat for Malik Allen . At the end of the season, Smith announced his retirement. [1]
On average, during his career, he scored 14.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game with 35.8 percent from the three-point line. Steve also retained the Atlanta Hawks record of 9 completed three-point shots in one game.
Team Career
Smith played for the US national team , in which, in 1994, he won a gold medal at the World Basketball Championship in Canada [2] . In 1999, he won a gold medal at the American Basketball Championships in San Juan , and in 2000 became the Olympic champion in the Sydney Summer Olympics . In 1989, he became the champion of the Summer Universiade in Duisburg as part of the US national team .
NBA Career
Steve worked as a commentator for Atlanta Hawks matches, and also acted as a university basketball analyst. In the 2008 season, he switched to NBA TV and was replaced by Hawkes broadcast by Dominic Wilkins .
