Hunter Island is located off the northwestern coast of Tasmania. He belongs to the so-called “ Hunter Island Group ”, to which, besides himself, the islands of Three Hammock , Robbins , , , , the cliffs of and others [2] . Sometimes the group of islands to which Hunter Island belongs is called the Fleurieu Group [3] .

From north to south, the island is 24 km long, while the width of the island from west to east ranges from 0.5 to 6 km [3] .

The highest point of the island is Chase Hill , 90 m high [4] .

Hunter Island is separated from Cape Grim, the northwestern tip of Tasmania , by a shallow Hunter Passage about 6 km wide [3] , and from neighboring Tri Hammock Island by a Hope Channel about 5 km wide km [4] .

History

Archaeological excavations at Cave Bay Cave , located on Hunter Island, showed that people inhabited these places 23,000 years ago [3] [5] [6] .

The first Europeans to discover this island were Matthew Flinders and George Bass in 1798. Initially, the island received the name Barren ( Barren Island [3] or Barren Isle [7] - can be translated as "barren, deserted island"). Subsequently, it was renamed Hunter Island [3] .

At the beginning of the 19th century, sealers lived on the island, and then tenants of pasture lands, succeeding each other for a long time [3] .
