Biography
Andrews was born into the family of a prosperous farmer who owns expensive land. Lowell had an older sister. The family seemed quite prosperous. Lowell was a quiet and intelligent boy who graduated well and later studied at the Department of Biology at the University of Kansas. He was obese. Once, one of the Kansas newspapers dedicated an article to him, calling him "The Cutest Boy in Walcott." No one knew that Lowell spent all his free time fantasizing about how he poisoned his entire family. He dreamed of becoming a gangster. The killing of a family to which he did not harbor hatred, he considered the only way to assert itself.
Thanksgiving, Lowell Lee was at home on vacation. On the evening of November 28, 1958, his 20-year-old sister Ginny sat with her parents in the room and watched TV. Lowell Lee locked himself in the bedroom. He read the last chapter of the novel “ The Brothers Karamazov ” [1] . When he finished reading, he shaved, put on his best suit and loaded a 22-gauge semi-automatic rifle. He also took a revolver of the same caliber. He walked down the hall to the room and shot his sister on the spot with a shot at the bridge of the nose. Then he shot at 41-year-old mother Apall 3 times [1] . Then in the 50-year-old father of William 2 times. Then he shot his mother 3 more times. But his dad was still alive. He crawled to the kitchen, but on the threshold of the kitchen Lowell pulled a revolver out of its holster and fired all the bullets at it, then reloaded and again shot everything at it. In total, he fired 17 bullets at his father [1] . He raised the window in the bedroom, tore the net on it. After he began to walk around the house and rummage through the cabinets, scattering things. He wanted to stage a robbery. Then he sat behind the wheel of his father's car and drove forty miles to Lawrence. Along the way, he stopped at the bridge, dismantled his weapon and threw it into the Kansas River.
Arrest, trial and sentence
In order to provide himself with an alibi, Lowell stayed in a student dormitory, where he lived while studying. Then he went to the cinema. He made it so that more people saw him. After the film, he returned home. There he called the police and said that their house was robbed [2] . Arriving at the crime scene, police detectives marveled at Lowell's calm and immediately suspected him of murder. He was arrested, but did not confess to anything. Then at the request of the detectives conducting the case, priest Virto Dameron, who knew Lowell's parents, arrived in prison at night. He gently spoke to him face to face, and in the end, Lowell confessed to him. Dameron invited Lowell to tell the police about this. Soon Lowell confessed to the detectives in the murder. [3]
The question of sanity Lowell puzzled psychiatrists. It was clear that he was aware of what he was doing and what would follow. The defendant was diagnosed with mild schizophrenia [3] . However, this did not exempt Lowell from punishment, and from the death penalty. By a court verdict on November 30, 1962, Lowell Lee Andrews was hanged in Kansas death row.
In popular culture
Truman Capote repeatedly came to the prison where Andrews was detained in order to interview the killers Perry Smith and Dick Hickock . The result of his trips was the book " Cold-blooded Murder ", in which there is a small segment describing the crime committed by Lowell Andrews.
Later, two films were shot about the life of Kapote himself - “ Notoriety ” and “ Kapote ”. In both films, Lowell's character appears briefly.
