Decoding of the name "DS-U2-I":

  • "DS" - " Dnepropetrovsk satellite ", a series of spacecraft for the needs of science.
  • U2 - “unified” (refers to the modification of DS-U2 )
  • And - Ionospheric

Content

Design Features. Features

The spacecraft DS-U2-I is developed on the basis of the universal platform DS-U2 . Power is supplied from non-oriented solar panels . This is a characteristic feature of the DS-U2 platform, distinguishing it from the DS-U1 and DS-U3 platforms developed by OKB-586.

The design feature of the spacecraft that distinguishes it from other spacecraft based on the DS-U2 is the presence of a block of special antennas for scientific equipment, consisting of 4 retractable ribbon pins 15 m long mounted on a common base, and a gas-reactive spinning system of the spacecraft around the longitudinal axis.

Features

  • Weight, kg - 286
  • The calculated parameters of the orbit:
  • perigee height, km - 219
  • apogee height, km - 1353
  • orbital inclination, deg - 48.5
  • Time of active existence, days - 90
  • Booster - 11K63

Composition of scientific equipment

  • Receivers PM-4M-1, PM-4M-N. operating at three fixed frequencies in the range of 15 ... 55 kHz;
  • filter converter FP-1;
  • FI filter
  • R-2P receivers. R-ZP. providing measurement of "white noise" in the frequency band with medium frequencies 0.185; 0.425; 3.0; 5.7 MHz;
  • F-2P filters. F-ZP;
  • power supply unit BP-1;
  • remote sensor 4K-63;
  • counter installation 1K60;
  • electronic block EB-4K.

Operation

The first launch of the spacecraft DS-U2-I ( Cosmos-119 ) took place on May 24, 1966 from the Kapustin Yar 86/1 cosmodrome using the Cosmos-2 launch vehicle (LV).

In the course of using spacecraft of the DS-U2-I series, the following scientific results were obtained:

  • A useful signal was received at all operating frequencies of the equipment, and the fact of the passage of 31.8 kHz and 44.9 kHz radio waves through the ionosphere was confirmed for the first time in the world;
  • The hypothesis about the possibility of the passage of ultra-low frequency electromagnetic waves through the ionosphere is confirmed;
  • The data obtained made it possible to evaluate the dependence of the concentration of charged particles in the lower layers of the ionosphere on the time of day and other factors.

In total, three devices of the DS-U2-I series were launched into orbits. The other two vehicles were Cosmos-142 and Cosmos-259 .
