The home championship of Great Britain in 1884 was the first draw of an international football competition held with the participation of four national teams of Great Britain - England , Scotland , Wales and Ireland . The first international matches were played since 1872 between the teams of England and Scotland, in 1876 and 1882 the teams of Wales and Ireland joined them. In 1883, four football associations held a conference, during which the rules of the game were standardized, and a decision was made to create an annual tournament with the participation of all four teams. The tournament was supposed to be played in a league format with the winner being identified by the most points scored.

The 1884 competition was held according to an unusual schedule. The Irish national team played all their matches first, having suffered a crushing defeat in each. Then a match was played between England and Scotland, in which, in a bitter struggle, the Scots won 1-0. Finally, Wales played their matches against the English and Scottish national teams, losing in both and thereby guaranteeing Scotland a victory in the first UK Home Championship.
