Dumas Sr. in 1844 decided to settle near Port Marly. In 1847, the work was completed - a three-story palace-castle in the Renaissance style, inside the Moorish living room, decorated in oriental style. 200 meters from Monte Cristo Castle is a pseudo-Gothic building called Dumas “ If Castle ” - a place for work, on the outer masonry of which are written the names of Dumas' works. As Peter Weil writes [2] :

“From Dumas, the estate he designed with an elegant castle of golden sandstone on three floors remained. Similar ones stand on the Loire , only much more, of course: how much money was enough, so much was built. In the Castle of Monte Cristo among the bright empire rooms - like a triumphant cry - the eastern hall with tiles, sofas, carpets, pillows, hookahs. Nearby, If Castle is a narrow two-story, supposedly Gothic, building of reddish stone. Around the English park with streams and artificial grottoes. "

In 1853, Dumas, under pressure from creditors, sold the estate [1] . Since then it has been passed from hand to hand, until it fell into decay. In 1969, the three communes of Port Marly, Peck, Marly-le-Roi and the company of Alexandre Dumas acquired the estate and began to restore it [3] .

In 1975, the estate was classified as a historical monument of France , and in 1987 it was registered in this capacity. The facades, the roofs of the building, the Moorish living room on the second floor, If castle, the bridge and the park, the entrance to the chateau with office buildings, fountains are under protection [1] .
