History
The project was launched by Google on February 1, 2011 in collaboration with 17 museums.
In 2012, a total of 184 museums, galleries and palaces from around the world joined the project. On Google Art sites, you can see more than 35,000 works of art. Along with exhibits of art museums, the site publishes panoramic shots from the halls of museums.
In 2013, the Finnish Athenaeum Museum of Art joins the project [1] . Of the Finnish art museums, the Museum of Contemporary Art EMMA from Espoo also participates in the project.
Development
The project was the result of the “20% rule” that was in effect at Google at that time. According to this rule, company employees had the right to devote 20% of their working time to third-party projects not related to their core business.
