Biography and Creativity
His father was a prosecutor. At the end of the course of science, in the rank of educator of several young men, he came with them to Paris; through patronage, in 1648 he received the position of historian of the Duke of Orleans, Gaston , but did not stay long.
Having managed to get close to the famous Pierre Dupuis , the chief librarian of the royal library , Variyas dismantled many manuscripts and made many extracts from them. Noticing such industriousness, Dupuis requested that Variyas be appointed assistant librarian. He remained in this position under the successor of Dupuis; under Colbert he was instructed to verify a copy of the Brienne manuscripts with the originals in the library, but he performed this matter with such negligence that he received his resignation.
Variyas retired to the monastery of St. Cosmas and there he worked on the history of France. Even before the publication, his work spread throughout the world and brought fame to the author even abroad. In 1669, the Dutch states offered him a significant pension to write the history of the United Netherlands , which he refused. Colbert deprived him of a pension for his service at the library. The archbishop of Paris, de Gaulle, having learned that Variyas was preparing to publish the History of Heresies and about the injustice of the minister, granted Variyas a pension from church money in 1670 ; which brought the wrath of the French Protestants to the author. As soon as the History of Heresies was published, a fierce criticism of Burnet and Larok began, accusing Variyas of predilection and untruthfulness of facts. Then Variyas began to be considered a novelist, not a historian, and his fame rolled. He died in 1696, 72 years old.
