Veno Taufer , actually Wenceslas Taufer ( Slovenian. Veno Taufer, Venceslav Taufer , February 19, 1933 , Ljubljana ) - Slovenian poet, essayist, playwright, translator, the largest figure in literary life in Slovenia in the second half of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries.

Biography

Father is a left-liberal activist, during the Second World War a member of the partisan movement, killed by the Nazis in 1943 . Wenceslas in the second half of the 1950s studied at the University of Ljubljana , made his debut in poetry in the student magazine Tribune ( 1956 ). He became the center of the circle of intellectuals who opposed official cultural policy, co-editor of the first independent Journal 57 . The magazine was closed by the authorities; Taufer was imprisoned. In the early 1960s, he worked for a short time on television, staged performances in the alternative theater Oder 57 , and collaborated with the alternative magazine Perspective . In 1966 - 1970 he worked in London on the BBC . In the 1980s he became one of the founders of the magazine New Review . In 1987 he joined the Committee on the Protection of Human Rights, actively participated in the democratization of the country. One of the founders of one of the first non-communist parties - the Slovenian Democratic Union . During the decade of the Yugoslav Wars, he participated in the organization of humanitarian aid, along with Drago Janczar , Niko Grafenauer and others. Delivering this aid to besieged Sarajevo .

Creativity

He was influenced by European modernism - from Baudelaire to Pound . His poetic collection Songbook with Old Words ( 1975 ) was called the first monument of Slovenian postmodernism .

He translated poems by Hopkins , Cavafy , W. B. Yeats , T. S. Eliot , W. Stevens , Jeffrey Hill , Thomas Wentslova , etc.
