Patrick Lloyd "Pat" McCrory ( English Patrick Lloyd "Pat" McCrory ; born October 17, 1956 , Columbus , Ohio ) is an American politician representing the Republican Party . Governor of North Carolina from January 2013 to January 2017 . Earlier, from 1995 to 2009, he was the mayor of Charlotte , he was a member of the National Security Council under President George W. Bush .

In 2016, he lost the gubernatorial election to State Attorney General Roy Cooper with a difference of 0.2% of the vote and, thus, became the first Governor of North Carolina since 1850 who could not be re-elected for a new term.
