Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment ( OGLE , literally the Optical Gravitational Linsing Experiment) is a Polish - American astronomical project to study dark matter using the method of gravitational microlensing . The project was founded in 1992, under the leadership of the University of Warsaw . The research is carried out with the collaboration of Princeton University and the Carnegie Institute .
Along the way, a study of dark matter during the project revealed several exoplanets . The project is headed by Professor Andrzej Udalski , co-author of the discovery of exoplanets OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb . The founder of the experiment OGLE Bogdan Pacinsky . It was he who in 1986 showed that modern CCDs already allowed for microlensing searches. Actually, the boom in this area began with the article of Pachinsky [1] . Major observations are made at the Las Campanas Observatory , located in Chile .
The main goals of the experiment are the Magellanic Cloud galaxy and spiral galaxies , in which a large number of stars can be used for microlensing stellar transits of transits .
The development of the project took place in four stages, three of which have already been completed. They are: OGLE-I (1992–1995), OGLE-II (1996–2000), and OGLE-III (2001–2009). OGLE-I was an experienced stage. During the second stage (OGLE-II) of the project, a special telescope was built, located at the Las Campanas Observatory (Chile). An 8-matrix mosaic CCD camera for the observatory was created in Poland. During the third stage (OGLE-III), the largest map of variable stars was created. In addition, during this stage, exoplanets were found for the first time using microlensing. Finding them has become an important task of the current fourth stage of the project [2] .
Other projects similar to OGLE are: American-Australian MACHO (Massive Compact Halo Object) and French EROS ( Experience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres ) [3] .
